Works in Progress (Crochet Projects on my hook at the moment)

It is always amazing to me how many projects I have going at once.  I sometimes think why can’t I just finish one before I start another one!  I have come to the realization that it is never going to happen!!  I guess I will never know why it works that way.  I get into a project and then my mind starts to wander or maybe I just start to daydream about what else to I would like to make.  🙂 I do eventually finish the projects I do start, well okay if I am going to be honest I do have some that have been put away for years.  Hmmm guess I should look into those one of these days!!  Below I have a Granny Square Afghan that I started and am still working on.

DSC01015

Here I have the Granny Squares themselves made without sewing them together. I have a total of 5 squares made for the Afghan.

DSC01122 Here I attached the Granny Squares together diagonally. I then proceeded to work on one side of the Granny Squares with a Ripple or Chevron pattern.  Here is the link that shows you pictures of how to attach the squares together and proceed with the zigzag pattern.                Tutorial Manta Hueco Zig Zag | Buscando Comienzos. You will have to use a translator for English.  Below is just another view of what I have done so far.

DSC01176

While working on this Afghan I started thinking I want to make something for myself. Wait for it….. of course I started another project! lol

DSC00991 DSC01174                                                                                   This is going to be a top to wear over a tank.  In the first picture I was using only 1 strand of thread and a smaller hook. I of course changed my mind and started all over with 2 strands of thread and a larger hook.  It is of the same stitch, the Marielle Lace Stitch. You can find it here How to Crochet the Marielle Lace Stitch NewStitchaDay.com.

DSC00992 Here is the diagram I am working off of. As you can see it is basically a square with a neck. This is such a simple top to make.  The front of the neck just goes down 2 inches and the back just 1 inch.  The sides are just sewn up to where the armhole would be.  There is not any shaping for the armholes. That makes this a very easy top to create.  It is meant to be a crop top but you could always add to the length to make it what ever size you wanted.   There are so many possibilities for this top. Make a tighter stitch, longer length, or a different width.  Depends on what you want from the top, a tighter fit or looser like I wanted to layer over a tank top!

Oh by the way I am also in the process of finishing up on the Barbie dress.  I have to wonder sometimes if I am the only one who has this many projects going at once! lol I sure hope not!!

Thanks for stopping by,                                                                                                                      Laura 🙂

Having Fun with Barbie Clothes

This all started out because a friend of mine had made her Granddaughter a dress for her Barbies.  It got me to thinking how difficult could it be to crochet Barbie clothes. I have to admit I did some research and looked up what others had designed.  I found a pattern and tried my hand at it.  Here is the finished dress below!

DSC01103                                                                                                     At this point I still had to sew snaps onto the back of the dress.  I did not however have small enough snaps to attach. I had to make a trip to the store to purchase them.  I did have fun making this dress and the pattern was easy to follow.                                                             Here is a link to the pattern I followed.  Barbie Simple Sheath Dress (Free Crochet Pattern)

Once I accomplished that dress my mind went into overdrive, which happens quite often with me on anything to do with crafts! lol  Now that I have gone off on a tangent back to the original thought!  I started to think that I could design something myself for Barbie.  Once I finished the dress above I understood what was needed to make clothes for Barbie.  Having sewing experience making my own clothes helped.  Below is what I have started on another dress for Barbie.

DSC01127

My thought for the dress is to make it a full skirt and be lacy on the bottom half of the skirt.  For the top I had chained enough to go around just under the breast and overlap a little on the back and continued back and forth for 6 rows and then started to work on the back. Both dresses are made from size 10 cotton thread and I used a size 7 hook on the purple dress and a size 1 for this dress.

DSC01151                                                                                                      I then continued the pattern for 6 stitches and worked them back and forth for 2 more rows and at the end of the next row and started to decrease stitches each row until I had a total of 3 stitches and fastened off. I then did the same for the other side on the back.  For the front I skipped 6 stitches for the arm hole and attached with a slip stitch and continued pattern for 4 stitches and continued the pattern for 2 rows. The next row I decreased once and then continued the pattern for 2 more rows and fastened off. I then proceeded to do the same for the other side on the front.  I then sewed the shoulder seams together.

DSC01148                                                                                                     This is another view of the front of the dress.  After I sewed the shoulder seams together I was ready to continue on with the bottom of the skirt. I attached the thread to the back and just chained 4 and skipped 1 chain and sc in the next chain on the bottom of original chain from the top part of the dress. I then worked that across, turned and chained 4 and sc in the next ch 4 space and across.  After the open chain work I then proceeded to start the pattern back up for 2 rows.  The next row I slip stitched them together in the back and continued working the pattern in Rnds. I am now at the point where I increased all around and that is where I left off.

I do believe I am going to have a lot of fun designing Barbie dresses for my Granddaughters.  I love making things for my Family and with the Barbie clothes they are smaller, so I am able to finish a project sooner than I do with the full size clothes.  I can not wait to see their faces when they receive the Barbie clothes.  As I finish the dress I will post pics so you can see what progress I have made.

My Project of A Crochet Baby Sweater

Here is one of the many projects that I have going at the moment.  I am at the moment in the process of finishing up on the gifts that I am making so you will have to wait to see those!

DSC00111 DSC00114

Here I have different views of the same sweater.  This sweater is going to be a size 0 – 3 months size.  Pictured here I only have the back and one of the front pieces done. As you can see I started on the other half of the front of the sweater.  I am using Bernat Baby Sport yarn. I just love the soft luxurious feel this yarn has.

I am debating on attaching a hood to this baby sweater. I am also running ideas through my head on how to fasten the front of the sweater together.  Anyone that would have any opinions on either of my ideas please feel free to comment. I would love to hear what you think!!!    Stay tuned for more pictures of this project as I finish the sweater.

Thank you very much for stopping by to take a look!                                                                   Hope you are having a Very Blessed Holiday Season!                                                                      Laura 🙂

A Holiday Baking Tradition

Mmmm Mmmm Good Holiday Baking! I went over to my Mother’s house so we could have some quality time together baking 🙂 We made Filled Sugar Cookies and Cinnamon Rolls!

DSC00089 (2)

This time of year I always love to do baking for me and my children.  It all started out with my Mom and the traditions that I carried over to my family.  When I was young we would bake Sugar Cookies and Cinnamon Rolls with my Mom.

DSC00098 (2)

Our Family Tradition was to have the Cinnamon Rolls Christmas morning while opening up gifts!  When I had been baking for the day the children would come in and smell the deliciousness and want to dive right in after school and gobble them all up.  Of course I made them wait until after they had supper!!!

DSC00103 (2)The finished Filled Sugar Cookies

My son’s to this day still want me to send them the Cinnamon Rolls for Christmas along with some Peanut Butter Fudge.  🙂  They now have to settle for having the Cinnamon Rolls sent to them and not have the aroma that comes from them baking at home.  I love to send them some baking love that comes from the heart!

What are some of your traditions for the Holidays?  As always Thanks for stopping by 🙂

The Spirit of Christmas

As Christmas draws near I am thinking about what brings about the Christmas Spirit. Is it the traditions that people have and do every year or something else? My husband and I were putting up the tree today and having fun with Christmas songs playing in the background. Even had our dog get into the action as you can see 🙂

DSC00463 DSC00424

As I sit here to write about the Christmas Spirit it reminds me of the time that I was asked by my employer what the Christmas Spirit meant to me. That was while I was working at Swiss Colony in Monroe WI and my children were still young.  My kids are now all grown and I have Grandchildren but I do believe the same things apply to how I feel about Christmas. I will share what I wrote then….

There are so many things that keep the Christmas Spirit alive for me! To start with it is being able to bake the treats that my family loves so well. Cinnamon rolls with that fresh baked smell, the cookies and candies that are made with sugar and all those fattening ingredients.  Then there is the putting up of the decorations the day after Thanksgiving, which has been a tradition in my house for a long time.  The tree comes out of storage along with all the rest of the decorations and that night after the chores are done we all gather around to put up the tree with the Christmas music playing in the background.

The hustle and bustle of trying to get the things that everyone wants on their list. You can actually feel the excitement in the air with people smiling at each other for no apparent reason.  When the first snowfall comes around, that is another exciting part of the joy of the Christmas Spirit especially for my kids! I go around singing too!! Of course what else would it be but Let it Snow! That song has always been one to give me that warm fuzzy feeling.

The thing that I love the most about this time of the year is seeing that special smile from someone that you really care about.  The sparkle that is in a child’s eyes when he or she looks up at you, saying I love you more than you can ever know.  The over abundance of energy that they seem to have this time of year, constantly asking you when Santa is going to be here.  There is also the list that is hung on the refrigerator for all to see of what they want Santa to bring them for the year.

Last, but not least is the openness of giving that happens around this time of year. I love that too! The kisses and hugs that are given, the warm handshakes, the smiles on people’s faces. Now what would really keep the spirit alive is if we as people could accomplish this feeling the whole year through.  Just think what the world would be like then!!

I also love to do crafts for the Holidays for decorations and gift giving! Here are some craft ideas to try!

On this one I think I would have a tendency to use more of Red, Green and White colors!  Thank you for taking a trip with me down memory lane on what the Christmas Spirit means to me.  I hope you all are able to reflect on what the Christmas Spirit means to you!  🙂 Have a Great Week!!

Handcrafted Gifts for the Holidays

I know the Holidays are approaching and will be here before we know it. I thought I would put this out there seeing the focus is going to be on Shopping this weekend!  I am and always have been in support of Local and Small Businesses and buying Hand Made items for the Holidays.

Being a person who makes, gives away and sells handmade items I know what goes into making those items that are unique and one of a kind!  When it says Handmade it is just that and you know that the item or items will be of a quality that you are just not going to get with a Mass produced item.

You will also be doing business with that person who has taken the time to produce this item. You will be able to ask questions and have an idea what actually went into the making of that item.  There is usually a story behind most Handmade items because they are made from this person’s passion or out of a love of doing that craft.

I wanted to get some answers to this question so I posted this statement and question on Facebook

“I purchase Handmade Items because of the quality of the product that has been made from an artisan! What are your reasons for purchasing Handmade Items?”

A couple of the comments I got to this question were…

” Because the maker of such items put all his/ her heart and soul while making them and because no matter what, no one item is identical.”                                                                          ” Cause my mom makes awesome items! plus because someone took the time to make the item by hand in a world that is all about instant gratification”                                                     Got to love the support from Family 🙂

I also agree with Handmadeology on all his reasons for shopping local and handmade businesses!

I know I love to shop on the internet from the comfort of my own home.  I can be in my PJ’s and just sit and shop to my hearts content, plus see all the wonderful items people have made.  If you are looking for that unique gift for someone or just for yourself don’t forget to check out those Local and Small Businesses that sell Handmade Items!

Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Learning Process

I am still in the process of learning what it takes to get this site up and running! I know I will be changing things quite often until it looks just right to me. Through trial and error I know I will accomplish this goal!  I suppose instead of just playing around and seeing how things work I really should enlist the help of the tutorials, but alas that would just make too much sense.  On the other hand I have come to realize that with me I do happen to learn more by doing than by just reading and being told how it is done.  Which brings to me another thought how many other people do better by on hands learning? Hmmmm… I might just have to go through and look that up!  It is amazing how much information is just right at the tips of our fingers! Well with that thought I am going to go back to playing around and my learning process.  🙂
