Simple Easter Basket Pattern

Molly and her Easter Basket

Easter is fast approaching so I thought I would see what I could crochet for some decorations. I created this Easter Basket. I love the way it turned out and it really is simple to make.

What you will need is a I/9 5.50 mm.

I used 2 strands of yarn and it was some that I had left over. I use Red Heart yarn and it did not take even a full skein of yarn. I used a variegated and a solid together.

You will also need 2 pipe cleaners, some craft glue, a yarn needle to sew in the ends and the handle on the basket and something to decorate the outside of the basket.

I used some jeweled color gems that I purchased from a local craft store. You really do not need a gauge for this project.

  • Stitches used single crochet (sc)
  • chain (ch)
  • slip stitch (sl st)

The basket is worked in rounds but you will slip stitch together at the end of each round, ch 1 turn and go the other direction.

To start out with you will use a magic circle, here is a link if you do not know how https://www.wikihow.com/Crochet-a-Magic-Ring

The Basket

In the magic circle sc 8 times and then pull the magic circle together.

  • Rnd 2 ch 1 turn, 2 sc in each st around, sl st into the 1st sc (16 sc)
  • Rnd 3 ch1 turn, * 2 sc in next st, sc in the next st* continue between *’s around, sl st together (24 sc)
  • Rnd 4 ch 1 turn, * 2 sc in next st, sc in the next 2 sts* continue between *’s around, sl st together (32 sc)
  • Rnd 5 ch 1 turn, sc in next st and around, sl st together
  • Rnd 6 ch 1 turn, * 2 sc in next st, sc in the next 3 sts* continue between *’s around, sl st together (40 sc)
  • Rnd 7 Repeat rnd 5
  • Rnd 8 ch 1 turn, * 2 sc in next st, sc in the next 4 sts* continue between *’s around, sl st together (48 sc)
  • Rnd 9 Repeat rnd 5
  • Rnd 10 – 17 Continue to repeat rnd 5, fasten off and weave in ends

The Handle

I used 2 pipe cleaners twisted together

ch 47

Row 1 Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next st, now take the 2 twisted pipe cleaners and start to sc over them, continue to do this across and at the end sc in the last 2 sts, fasten off and weave in the ends

Now sew the handle onto the basket about 2 inches down from the top, I used the variegated yarn to sew the handle on and as you can see below it blended really well.

I then proceeded to glue on the gems for a finished basket. If you have any questions please contact me and I will be happy to answer them for you.

The Spirit of Christmas

As Christmas draws near I am thinking about what brings about the Christmas Spirit. Is it the traditions that people have and do every year or something else? My husband and I were putting up the tree today and having fun with Christmas songs playing in the background. Even had our dog get into the action as you can see 🙂

As I sit here to write about the Christmas Spirit it reminds me of the time that I was asked by my employer what the Christmas Spirit meant to me. That was while I was working at Swiss Colony in Monroe WI and my children were still young.  My kids are now all grown and I have Grandchildren but I do believe the same things apply to how I feel about Christmas. I will share what I wrote then….

There are so many things that keep the Christmas Spirit alive for me! To start with it is being able to bake the treats that my family loves so well. Cinnamon rolls with that fresh baked smell, the cookies and candies that are made with sugar and all those fattening ingredients.  Then there is the putting up of the decorations the day after Thanksgiving, which has been a tradition in my house for a long time.  The tree comes out of storage along with all the rest of the decorations and that night after the chores are done we all gather around to put up the tree with the Christmas music playing in the background.

The hustle and bustle of trying to get the things that everyone wants on their list. You can actually feel the excitement in the air with people smiling at each other for no apparent reason.  When the first snowfall comes around, that is another exciting part of the joy of the Christmas Spirit especially for my kids! I go around singing too!! Of course what else would it be but Let it Snow! That song has always been one to give me that warm fuzzy feeling.

The thing that I love the most about this time of the year is seeing that special smile from someone that you really care about.  The sparkle that is in a child’s eyes when he or she looks up at you, saying I love you more than you can ever know.  The over abundance of energy that they seem to have this time of year, constantly asking you when Santa is going to be here.  There is also the list that is hung on the refrigerator for all to see of what they want Santa to bring them for the year.

Last, but not least is the openness of giving that happens around this time of year. I love that too! The kisses and hugs that are given, the warm handshakes, the smiles on people’s faces. Now what would really keep the spirit alive is if we as people could accomplish this feeling the whole year through.  Just think what the world would be like then!!

I also love to do crafts for the Holidays for decorations and gift giving! Here are some craft ideas to try!

On this one I think I would have a tendency to use more of Red, Green and White colors!  Thank you for taking a trip with me down memory lane on what the Christmas Spirit means to me.  I hope you all are able to reflect on what the Christmas Spirit means to you!  🙂 Have a Great Week!!
