Handcrafted Gifts for the Holidays

I know the Holidays are approaching and will be here before we know it. I thought I would put this out there seeing the focus is going to be on Shopping this weekend!  I am and always have been in support of Local and Small Businesses and buying Hand Made items for the Holidays.

Being a person who makes, gives away and sells handmade items I know what goes into making those items that are unique and one of a kind!  When it says Handmade it is just that and you know that the item or items will be of a quality that you are just not going to get with a Mass produced item.

You will also be doing business with that person who has taken the time to produce this item. You will be able to ask questions and have an idea what actually went into the making of that item.  There is usually a story behind most Handmade items because they are made from this person’s passion or out of a love of doing that craft.

I wanted to get some answers to this question so I posted this statement and question on Facebook

“I purchase Handmade Items because of the quality of the product that has been made from an artisan! What are your reasons for purchasing Handmade Items?”

A couple of the comments I got to this question were…

” Because the maker of such items put all his/ her heart and soul while making them and because no matter what, no one item is identical.”                                                                          ” Cause my mom makes awesome items! plus because someone took the time to make the item by hand in a world that is all about instant gratification”                                                     Got to love the support from Family 🙂

I also agree with Handmadeology on all his reasons for shopping local and handmade businesses!

Crochet Men’s Hooded Sweater Part I

As this Friday draws to a close and evening approaches I thought I would bring you along with me on what happens when I make a Sweater!

Here are my tools of the trade. Well some of them anyway.  My tablet is full of patterns that I have written down in a language that only I can understand! 🙂  I have come up with my own form of shorthand.  Anyone else would look at it and wonder how on earth you were suppose to follow any of this! lol

This is part of the pattern process that I use. This is where I figure out what I want for a stitch and what size the sweater is going to be.  You can see it does remind you of a sewing pattern.

Here I have the Front of the Sweater finished. It does take me a while to finish each piece for this sweater. The making of this Sweater from start to finish takes me approx 25 hrs for a size Med. It does depend on the size of the Sweater as to how long it takes me to finish it. I love being able to try out different colors and stitches to see what I like or I think someone else might like. It is amazing and fun when you start to play around with colors and you find out what ones blend well together. You sure can come up with some crazy combinations!

At the moment I am in the process of making the sleeves so you will have to stay tuned to find out what they are going to look like and what happens next!  Thanks for taking a look and hope you tune in for the next part! 🙂
